How Students Can Balance Academic And Social Life

Updated: Dec 6, 2022

Managing an active social life along with focusing on academics can be a challenging task for most students. However, it is vital for every student to take a break at some point to keep the stress and anxiety at bay that come with an academic routine. Hence every student should find ways to have a balanced life while going to school regularly. Here are some tips to implement in your daily routine to offset the anxiety that comes with academic & social life.

  1. Plan a Suitable Schedule: Prepare a timetable listing your daily activities & chores. Assign optimum hours for your study tasks while warranting some time for additional activities. Identify the time of the day which harmonizes your ability to absorb the challenging concepts of your curriculum. Take a breather when you begin to have difficulty with concentration. Utilize the break time to undertake pursuits that help you relax like playing some indoor/ outdoor games or talking to friends etc. This kind of schedule planning can help you improve mental efficiency.

  2. Establish Goals & Attempt to Focussed: Document your goals on a chart & place it on the front wall of your study area. Looking at your goals will help you visualize and prioritize your work appropriately. This does not imply focussing only on academic goals. Do include your hobbies & other interests when drafting your daily timetable.

  3. Distract Your Distractions: Regular interruptions will steer you away from your goals & drafted schedule, meddling with the idea to balance social and academic plans. Pick a distraction-free zone to complete study-related chores, like a quiet room or library. Focusing on the tasks at hand improves your efficiency over time which enables you to complete work as per your planned schedule and saves time for social interactions.

  4. Decide What is Best for You: Never compare your routine with that of your friends & peers. Determine an arrangement that best meets your need and comfort. It is easy to get drawn to a vivacious group with hyperactive schedules. But such an arrangement may not be suitable for your work style. Testing what works for your capabilities can help you organize your time better.

  5. Stay Healthy: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle requires making smart choices and is essential for academic and social growth. A fit body is central to executing any level of planning & scheduling. A nutritious diet, daily exercise, a proper sleep schedule, stress-busting activities, etc. contribute to both physical & mental fitness, resulting in a happier & productive life.

  6. Spend Time with Your Friends & Peers: Friendly interactions are therapeutic and are scientifically known to have long-term physical & emotional health benefits. Friendships can create a more engaging learning environment for students, and they are motivated to perform better in a group that is known to them. Children who take the time to build friendships have a better sense of belonging and support system and are likely to perform better academically.

  7. Know When to Ask for Help: Seek help when you are stuck with an academic problem. Teachers, tutors, mentors or advisors can be a good starting point for this. They can aid you in finding better ways and techniques to approach and rectify the scholarly issues at hand. In many instances, friends & peers can be a good resource to solve smaller issues. This will save you time and keep the stress at bay.
